Group Structure and Management
With the extenuating challenges due to the pandemic, the steep learning curve associated with computational research (often very abstract and nonintuitive to new students), and the growing size of our group, we use a dynamic team-based organization structure. Specifically, using data collected through student surveys, all our projects are now organized as teams consisting of a lead (overall responsibility, logistics, collaborations), co-lead (usually a student with a complimentary skillset), and one or two student advisors (to encourage cross-fertilization of ideas across projects). This dynamic structure (i.e., students move between projects as necessary) has proven to be highly successful as it (1) encourages students to interact with and learn from one another, (2) gives them a broader picture of our research goals (a useful skill during job interviews), and (3) trains them for future team-oriented internships and industry careers.
